The Los Angeles Lakers drafted D’Angelo Russell with the 2nd round pick in 2015. Nicknamed “DLo”, this veteran Point Guard has played his first NBA All-Star game in 2019. After having a career with different NBA teams, Russell returned to the Lakers in 2023 through a three-team trade process involving the Utah Jazz.

DLo has played 17 games with the Lakers in the 2022/23 seasons. Throughout these games, he averaged 17.4 points with 2.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. He also shot 48.4% from the field, including 41.4% from the 3-point range. He also helped take his team to the postseason for the first time. This also led to him resigning for the 2023/24 season.

Los Angeles Lakers (2015-2017, 2023-Present)

D’Angelo Russell debuted for the Lakers on October 28, 2015. Throughout his four seasons with the Lakers, Russell has played 163 games and has averaged 14.6 points with 3.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.2 blocks per game. He also shot 41.5% from the field, including 35.7% from the 3-point range.

During his first career with the Lakers, he is notable for scoring 39 points during the 2015/16 season which was the most points scored by a Lakers newcomer in a regular season since Elgin Baylor’s 55 points in 1959. Furthermore, he also scored eight three-pointers which surpassed the previous record of six scored by Nick Van Exel. His skills led him to be included in the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2016.

DLo retired to the Lakers in 2023 as part of a trade involving three teams including the Utah Jazz and took his team to the playoffs for the season. For the 2023/24 season, Russell averaged 14.0 points per game with the Lakers in three games so far.

Brooklyn Nets (2017-2019)

DLo joined the Brooklyn Nets after he was traded to the team in the 2017 offseason in return for the rights to the 27th pick in the draft, Kyle Kuzma and Brook Lopez. In his two years with the team, he averaged 19.0 points with 3.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.3 blocks per game while shooting 42.8% from the field, including 35.5% from the deep. During the 2017/18 season, Russell recorded the first triple-double in his career with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists against the Raptors. This was the first triple-double for the team since Terrence Williams on April 9, 2010.

Russell played his first NBA All-Star game with the team in 2019. He became a restricted free agent in the 2019 offseason. However, he was also traded to the Golden State Warriors in the 2019 offseason through a sign-and-trade process for Kevin Durant.

Golden State Warriors (2019-2020)

Russell has played only one season for the Warriors. During the 2019/20 season, he played 33 games with the Warriors while averaging 23.6 points with 3.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. He also shot 43.0% from the field, including 37.4% from deep. He was traded in 2020 to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Andrew Wiggins, a protected future draft pick from the first round and a second-round draft pick from the future.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2020-2023)

DLo’s arrival at the Timberwolves reunited him with his good friend Karl Anthony-Towns (KAT). In his four-season tenure with the team, he played 173 games and averaged 18.5 points with 3.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.4 blocks per game. He also shot 43.2% from the field, including 36.6% from the 3-point range. In 2023, he was traded back to the Los Angeles Lakers by a trade process involving three teams including the Utah Jazz.
