He was born in Toronto, Canada, and began playing basketball at a young age at the North Kipling Community Centre and the Rexdale Community Hub. He initially attended Central Toronto Academy in Ontario and later transferred to the MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts. He joined Redemption Christian Academy in Northfield, Massachusetts, for his senior season. During his senior season, Banton played in the BioSteel All-Canadian Game, where he finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, according to his college profile. He was a four-star-rated recruit in 2018 by Rivals and enrolled at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He joined the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers men's basketball team for his freshman season, i.e., the 2018-19 season, where he averaged 3.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game over 31 games. Banton joined the Nebraska Cornhuskers men's basketball team, which represents the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, on May 1, 2019. He sat out for the 2019-20 season after transferring to the Cornhuskers due to NCAA rules and played his sophomore season with them. After that season, Banton declared for the 2021 NBA Draft.

Banton was selected by the Toronto Raptors as the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft. According to Globe-News Canada, he was the first Canadian to be drafted by the Raptors. He also joined the Raptors 905 in the NBA G League from 2021 to 2023. For the 2023-24 season, Banton joined the Boston Celtics in the NBA and the Maine Celtics in the NBA G League. He made his NBA debut against the Washington Wizards on October 20, 2021. According to his NBA profile, Banton represented Canada at the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup, where he averaged 15.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 29.5 minutes per game.
