The Dallas Mavericks vs Minnesota Timberwolves wasn't only the second game of the five-game slate in the 2025 NBA Christmas Day. It was also a rematch of the 2024 Western Conference finals that the Texas squad won 4-1 to advance to the NBA Finals, which they lost against the Boston Celtics.
Despite being two of the best teams in the conference last season, they are living different realities at this point in the season. The Mavericks rank fourth in the West standings with a 19-10 record while the Timberwolves are struggling to get close to the team they were last year, boasting a 14-14 record, which would give them the last play-in tournament spot if the season ended today.
Despite playing without Luka Doncic for the entire second half, the Mavericks put on a fight against the Timberwolves, but Minnesota got the 105-99 win on Christmas.

Dallas Mavericks vs Minnesota Timberwolves game recap
The Dallas Mavericks vs Minnesota Timberwolves started with both teams failing to score as desired, which resulted in a 50-point first quarter (26-24 for the Timberwolves). Julius Randle and Anthony Edwards each scored eight points to lead the Timberwolves. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving responded with 11 and eight units, respectively, for the home squad.
The Timberwolves took off in the second quarter, holding the Mavericks to only 16 points while they scored nearly twice the points they put on the scoreboard. Edwards only added five points, but that wasn't an issue since Rudy Gobert joined him and Randle as the only three players scoring in double digits (11 for Randle and 10 for Gobert).
Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic continued leading the Mavericks, but they only scored three points each in the second quarter. The Timberwolves entered halftime up 57-40 and ready to get revenge on the Mavs.
The Mavericks showed signs of life in the fourth quarter, even going on an 18-7 run in the first six minutes of the period, putting pressure on the Timberwolves. Without Luka Doncic on the court, Kyrie Irving took care of matters and tried to carry his team to the 20th win of the 2024-25 NBA season.
They continued pushing and led the fourth quarter 26-9 with 2:18 left on the clock. Nevertheless, the Timberwolves responded and scored six points from that moment to hold back the Mavericks and secure the 105-99 win.
