The Dallas Mavericks made the NBA Finals last season but have struggled to start this season. They will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they travel to face the Utah Jazz on Thursday. Both teams haven’t had the greatest starts to the season and are languishing in the Western Conference standings.
Dallas is 12th with a 5-6 record and is coming off of a 120-117 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. The Emirates NBA Cup game saw several point swings with the final one going in Golden State’s favor. The Mavs led 114-108 with over three minutes left in the game. However, Steph Curry went on a 12-3 run to get the Warriors a win.
Utah, meanwhile, is last in the West with a 2-8 record. The Jazz faced the Phoenix Suns in an NBA Cup game on Tuesday and lost 120-112. Utah was led by John Collins' 29 points and 10 rebounds but that wasn't enough, as Devin Booker had 31 points for Phoenix and guided his team to a win even without Kevin Durant.

Dallas Mavericks vs Utah Jazz: Key Matchups
Mavs backcourt vs Jazz backcourt
The Mavericks have one of the best backcourts in the league in Doncic and Kyrie Irving. The Slovenian star averages 28.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game, while Irving averages 25.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists. While Collin Sexton has been good for Utah with averages of 15.7 points, he should find it difficult to go toe to toe with the Dallas backcourt.
Lauri Markkanen vs Dallas front court
Lauri Markkanen has struggled to start the season with averages of just 16.7 points and 6.3 rebounds. Last season, he averaged 23.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg. If Dallas’ front court, that comprises Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, can contain Markkanen, the Mavs should march to an easy win.
