Before coming to the NBA, Theis had a very promising career overseas, where he played in the Basketball Bundesliga. He was a four-time all-star and a three-time champion in the league.

Theis made his basketball debut by playing for the German top-tier level league, Basketball Bundesliga for the 2010-11 NBA season. He initially played with Braunschweig’s development squad, most gaining playing time alongside his brother. He earned EuroBasket.com’s Most Improved Player honors for the 2010-11 season. After the 2011-12 season, Theis transferred to Ratiophram Ulm where he played 2 seasons. In the 2013-14 season, Theis won the BBL Best Young Player Award. For the next three seasons, Theis transferred to Brose Bamberg, where he won was named an all-star for three straight seasons and also won three straight championships.

After this, Theis went to play in the NBA and was signed by the Boston Celtics for the 2017-18 season. He played solid minutes off the bench for them and resigned back with the Celtics in 2019. In fact, he fits with the team so well that the Celtics coach, Brad Stevens, said that he complements the starters really well and ‘fits the other guys perfect’. In the 2020-21 season, the Celtics traded Theis to the Bulls where he was shipped off mid-season to the Houston Rockets. After spending half a season with the Houston Rockets, he was traded back to the Celtics in a mid-season deal. He spent two seasons with the Celtics before signing with the Indiana Pacers.

Daniel Theis’s German career

Theis was a member of the German junior and senior national teams. With the German junior national teams, he represented the country in the FIBA Under-20 World Cup and the FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. In 2014, he transferred to the men’s senior team and has been playing there ever since. So far, he’s only represented Germany in the 2015 FIBA Qualification tournament.
