He was born on October 2, 1997, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. Hunter joined high school basketball at Friends' Central School, where he was named Pennsylvania Class AA Player of the Year in 2015. Representing the University of Virginia, he led his team, the Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team, to the 2019 NCAA Championship. That same year, Hunter earned several accolades, including NABC Defensive Player of the Year, First-team All-ACC, and ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Hunter was selected fourth overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2019 NBA Draft. Although drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, he made his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks on October 24, 2019.
