Born on August 7, 1989, in Compton, California, DeRozan attended Compton High School, where he played on the varsity basketball team for four years. He was ranked as one of the top college recruits in the nation from the class of 2008 at the time. Rivals.com ranked him No.3 and Scout.com ranked him No.6.

He was then traded to the Chicago Bulls in a sign-and-trade deal on August 11, 2021, after three years with the Spurs.

DeRozan is a six-time NBA All-Star, twice part of the All-NBA Second Team (2018, 2022), and once part of the All-NBA Third Team (2017). He has also represented Team USA at the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, winning gold with them on both occasions.
