Derrick White is a professional basketball player who plays point and shooting guard positions for the Boston Celtics in the NBA. With an impressive journey right from his college days, White honed his skills by playing three seasons in the NCAA Division II with UCCS Mountain Lions. He then transferred to Division I, and joined the Colorado Buffaloes in his senior year. Having had an impressive performance with Buffaloes, he was named as a member of the five-man All-Defensive team. In 2017, Derrick White was drafted with 29th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Draft. In his very first year, White showcased his skills and over the next four seasons with the Spurs, he led the team to the playoffs twice.

In 2022, White was traded to the Boston Celtics. In his first season with the Celtics, White played a crucial role in the team’s impressive run to the NBA Finals, where he averaged around 13.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in the playoffs. His most memorable moment came in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals when he hit a sensational buzzer-beating game-winner against the Miami Heat. Derrick White is known for his versatility and can play well at the point guard and shooting guard positions. His defensive approach on the court got his name to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in the 2023 and 2024

Derrick White High School

Derrick White started his basketball journey in Parket, Colorado where he attended Legend High School in Colorado and started playing basketball for the school team. In his senior year, White boasted of an impressive performance averaging 17.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. In high school, he surpassed the 1000-point mark, which is a testament to his scoring ability.

Despite his impressive performance in high school, White received close to no offers from NCAA Division 1 colleges. No four-year institutions extended scholarship offers to him, a situation that did not deter him but rather fueled his determination to succeed. He decided to attend the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS), opting for the Division II basketball route to play under their new head coach.

At UCCS, White's talent and hard work did not go unnoticed. He earned all-conference honors twice and was instrumental in leading his team to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in his junior year. He eventually transferred to play for the Colorado Buffaloes, where his perseverance and dedication to the game eventually led him to a significant milestone in his basketball career by making it to the professional league that is the NBA.

After four seasons with the Spurs, White’s journey took a new turn as he was traded to the Boston Celtics in 2022. He now looks to aid superstars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, in the Celtics’ bid for the title this season (2023-24).
