He played baseball and football well but had to concentrate on basketball after a rotator cuff injury. After eighth grade, the family relocated to Bettendorf, Iowa, where he began playing basketball at Bettendorf High School and became a starter; he also broke records and received Co-Iowa Mr. Basketball in 2019. Carton committed to Ohio State as a four-star recruit, later transferring to Marquette where he averaged 13.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game according to Sports Reference, and then declared for the 2021 NBA draft. He was unfortunately not selected in the draft but managed to sign a contract with the Charlotte Hornets on August 7, 2021, but was later released. He later joined the Greensboro Swarm as an affiliate player.
