Johnson began his career with the Miami Heat. He played five seasons with the organization, where he averaged 11.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. The 6'3" guard was also a part of two postseason runs with the Heat, but during his time with the team, they never made it past the Conference Semifinals.

Following his time in Miami, Johnson then spent a brief stint with the Phoenix Suns. He suited up for 44 total games across two seasons, including starting in 15. During this time, Johnson averaged 7.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists across his 20.9 minutes per game.

After being released by the Suns midway through the 2019-20 season, the then-27-year-old traveled back to the East Coast to join the Brooklyn Nets. Johnson played a notable role for the Nets and produced the best postseason statistics of his NBA career this year.

During the 23.8 minutes per game he played in the playoffs, Johnson averaged 13.8 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.8 rebounds while shooting 39.3% on three-point attempts. The Nets were eliminated by the Raptors in the opening round.

Johnson played in 39 games with the Nets in the 2020-21 season with Brooklyn before being released. He then inked a pair of 10-day minimum contracts with the Sixers and Spurs and has not been given an NBA opportunity since then.

With 354 games of NBA experience already and a compatible skillset with most NBA contenders, the door cannot fully be shut on Tyler Johnson making a return. However, for the time being, he will focus on competing in Australia with fellow former NBA player Aron Baynes, who is also on the Bullets' roster.
