Then in July 2023, Dru started his second stint with the Heat but suffered a season-ending ACL injury against the Cavaliers on November 22. Dru Smith began his college basketball career on the Evansville Purple Aces men's basketball team at the University of Evansville, Indiana. Owing to his performances Smith earned a spot on the MVC Most Improved Team of the Year for the 2017-18 season. After spending two years at Evansville, Smith transferred to the Missouri Tigers men's basketball team at the University of Missouri. As a redshirt junior in the 2019-20 season, Smith averaged a team-high 12.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.1 steals in 31 games.
