After accepting an academic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Akron, Freeman had a remarkable five-year basketball career from 2019 to 2024. As a freshman, Freeman played sparingly for the Zigs, totaling just 13 minutes throughout the season. However, Freeman grew four inches between his first and second years and his minutes increased in his sophomore season, as he earned first of his four Mid-American Conference (MAC) All-Defensive Team honors. During the 2021–22 season, Freeman’s offensive game began to develop as well. He averaged a double-double for the season with 13.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, leading the nation in field goal percentage at 66.5%. Freeman was also named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year in the 2021-22 collegiate season, and he also led the Akron Zips to a MAC Tournament title, where he was named the tournament MVP.
Freeman continued his strong play during his junior season, and in his senior season, he had a standout year. He became the NCAA rebounding leader in 2024, averaging 12.9 rebounds per game. Freeman was also named the MAC Player of the Year and was once again honored as the MAC Tournament MVP. After an illustrious college career, Enrique Freeman was selected in the 2024 NBA Draft as the 50th overall pick in the second round by the Indiana Pacers. He is now working to secure his future in the NBA while playing for the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Mad Ants, the Pacers' G League affiliate.
