FIBA Asia Women's Championship 2013: Tough road ahead for India

India has a tough road ahead when it opens its campaign of the 25th edition of the FIBA ASIA Championship for Women which is going to be held at Bangkok from October 27 to November 3, 2013. Top three teams from the championship will qualify for the FIBA World Championship for Women to be played in Turkey from September 27 to October 5, 2014.

The championship is divided in to two levels; level 1 & 2 as following.

Level 1

  1. China
  2. Chinese Taipei
  3. India
  4. Japan
  5. Kazakhstan
  6. Korea

Level 2

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Indonesia
  3. Malaysia
  4. Philippines
  5. Thailand
  6. Uzbekistan

Top four teams from Level 1 will advance to the semifinals of the championship.

East Asian teams are stronger in the Asia’s women’s competition. Korea have won 12 titles while China have won 11 titles. Japan have won gold in 1 occasion.

The biggest challenge for India will be to remain in the Level 1 of the championship. The bottom two finishers of the Level 1 will play with the top two finishers of the Level 2 with the winners remaining in the Level 1 of the competition for next edition. It will be tough challenge for South Asian giant as well as the new coach Fan Garcia.
