The most anticipated basketball tournament is here. The 2023 FIBA World Cup is set to commence on August 25th, where 32 teams will battle it out for bragging rights and basketball supremacy: the title of being the best basketball nation in the world. For the first time in the tournament’s history, the World Cup is being hosted by three nations: the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.
Group A is one of the eight groups containing 4 teams that will be playing in the World Cup. Group A consists of Angola, Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and Italy. Every team will play each other and the top two teams of the group will advance to the next round.

Angola (FIBA Ranking 23)
The Angola men’s national basketball team has been a member of FIBA since 1979. They have appeared in the FIBA World Cup 9 times but haven’t been a recipient of any medal so far. They are among the few African teams that have made the tournament and they will be looking to make a statement this time around.
Dominican Republic (FIBA Ranking 21)
The Dominican Republic men’s basketball team has been a member of FIBA since 1954. They have appeared in the FIBA World Cup 4 times and have made it past the group stages only once. Some notable players they have on their team are Karl-Anthony Towns and Al Horford.
The Philippines (FIBA Ranking 40)
The Philippines men’s basketball team has been a member of FIBA since 1936. They appeared in every iteration of the World Cup except one in 1963 where Philippine President Diosdado Macapagal's refusal to allow Yugoslavia and other communist countries to participate in the tournament which was being held there led to the team’s suspension. Some notable players on their team include Jordan Clarkson and others.
Italy (FIBA Ranking 10)
Italy is the highest-ranked team in this group and is expected to finish first. They have been a member of FIBA since 1932 and have appeared in the FIBA World Cup nine times but haven’t been a recipient of any medal so far. Some notable players on their team include Danillo Gallinari and Marco Belinelli.
