The carnival for basketball is here! The FIBA World Cup returns to action in August as the war for basketball supremacy begins. 32 nations will battle it out to see who is crowned the ultimate champion. For the first time in the tournament’s history, three nations will be privy to hosting the tournament. Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia will all host the tournament throughout its duration. The FIBA World Cup will be held between August 25th and September 10th.
What teams are in Group C?
Group C is possibly the most star-filled group in the FIBA World Cup. The group consists of the United States, Greece, New Zealand, and Jordan. Let’s take a look at each team.
Country | Region |
The United States of America | North America |
Greece | Europe |
New Zealand | Oceania |
Jordan | Africa |
United States of America (FIBA Ranking 2)
The mighty United States headline the star-studded group. With players such as Austin Reaves, Anthony Edwards, Jaren Jackson Jr., and many others, the USA is expected to be on the front line of the tournament once again. Anything less than the title would be considered a disappointment for the United States and they intend to do the same. The USA has been a winner of the World Cup 5 times, tied with Yugoslavia for the most title wins. They will be looking to edge over Yugoslavia and add their sixth title.
Greece (FIBA Ranking 9)
Greece has been given any shot at winning the FIBA World Cup only because of one player: Giannis Antetokounmpo. With the two-time NBA MVP leading the team, the sky is the limit for them. Greece winning the championship would be a complete underdog story. But can any team with a two-time MVP be really considered an underdog?
New Zealand (FIBA Ranking 26)
The New Zealand Men’s basketball team joined FIBA in 1951. They have appeared in the FIBA World Cup six times, but haven’t been a recipient of any medal so far. With titans such as Greece and the USA in the group, it is hard seeing the Kiwis make a top-16 finish, but stranger things have happened so you never know!
Jordan (FIBA Ranking 33)
This is only the fourth appearance for Jordan in the FIBA World Cup. The African nation is trying to cement itself as a solid basketball nation and FIBA World Cup appearances are definitely a good start. Jordan is not expected to qualify for the second round but a good showing can never hurt!
