The most important basketball tournament is here! FIBA World Cup is all set to return back to action this August as teams compete to reign for basketball supremacy. 32 nations, across the globe, will fight it out to come out as the ultimate champion. Defending champion Spain will look to defend their crown, however, the United States of America is proclaimed to be the favourite. With their entire roster made of NBA players, the USA boasts of talents that no other team participating in the tournament has. But time and again, the USA has been brutally reminded that it is not talent, but hustle, grit, and determination that wins you championships. The tournament will be held in Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia; the first time in the tournament’s history that the games are spanned across three nations. The FIBA World Cup begins on August 25th.
Who is in Group F of the FIBA World Cup?
Group F consists of Slovenia, Cabo Verde, Georgia, and Venezuela. The group doesn’t boast a lot of star power and Slovenia is expected to be the favorite to top the group.
Country | Region |
Slovenia | Eastern Europe |
Cabo Verde | Africa |
Georgia | Europe/Asia |
Venezuela | South America |
Slovenia (FIBA Ranking 7)
Slovenia is ranked this high only because of one player: Luka Doncic. The Slovenian phenom has proved that he can carry this team to extreme heights. In the 2021 Olympics, Doncic took his otherwise pedestrian Slovenian team (compared to the competition) all the way to the semi-finals and came within a shot of the bronze medal. Nobody expects Slovenia to win the championship but with Luka Doncic at the helm, anything is possible.
Cabo Verde (FIBA Ranking 64)
Cabo Verde has been a part of FIBA since 1988 but this is the nation’s first appearance in the FIBA World Cup. Ranked 64 by FIBA, nobody expects Cabo Verde to even win a single game. But small nations like Cabo Verde have a lot of pride and we can count on the fact that they won’t go down without a fight.
Georgia (FIBA Ranking 32)
Georgia has been a part of FIBA since 1992 but like Cabo Verde, this is the nation’s first appearance at the FIBA World Cup. Georgia is not expected to make a top-16 finish, but stranger things have happened so you never know!
Venezuela (FIBA Ranking 17)
Since 1990, Venezuela has never made a top-16 finish in the FIBA World Cup. With them being the clear second-best team in their group, this time around Venezuela is expected to make the 2nd round. A trip to the knockout stages can be pretty ambitious, but nonetheless not far out of reach.
