China has a very rich basketball history and has participated the most number of times in the FIBA World Cup from Asia. They have appeared in 10 FIBA World Cups and 9 Olympic Games and stand 27th in the overall FIBA standings. The best performance came from the team in the 1994 FIBA World Cup, when they finished in 8th place.
The three straight FIBA World Cups are scheduled to happen in Asia first being in China, in 2019, where the team finished at the 24th place, second in - the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia together, this year, and finally in Qatar in 2027.
The 2023 FIBA World Cup will be played from 25 August to 10 September where 32 teams from all around the globe will participate and the tournament will act as a qualification round for the 2024 Summer Olympics in France.
Team China FIBA World Cup Roster
Team China has a stronghold over Asia and established itself as a dominant team. They have won 14 FIBA Asia Championships out of 16, but the team struggles to perform in front of European and American powers, as a result, the team always gets eliminated after the first or second round of the tournament.
This time China is coached by Serbian coach Sasa Djordjevic, and the team is ready to fight for the 2023 FIBA Basketball title. Team China has announced its 18-men roster, which also includes key players' names like Zhou Peng, Qi Zhou, and Wang Zhelin.
China is placed in Group B and the other teams in the group are South Sudan, Serbia, and Puerto Rico. The team will have its first-round match on 26 August against Serbia, will face South Sudan after a one-day rest on 28 August, and finally Puerto Rico on 30th August, therefore if China succeeds to make it to the top two in its pool, then it will meet the top teams from Group A which includes the host Philippines, Angola, Italy, and the Dominican Republic.
After seeing the previous stats, it seems like China will easily rule the group-stage matches and experience real competitiveness during the second round or in the playoffs.
