Are there German NBA Players?

The German national men's basketball team, called the Deutsche Basketball Nationalmannschaft hereinafter also referred to as "Die Mannschaft", represents Germany internationally. At this moment, Germany ranks 11th in the world basketball rankings. The team is directed by the German Basketball Federation, termed as (Deutscher Basketball Bund) which is the governing body for basketball in Germany.

Germany's greatest achievement came in 1993 when they won the gold medal at EuroBasket 1993. They also received medals of silver in 2005 and bronze in 2022 in the EuroBasket. Germany has participated six times in the FIBA World Cup, winning a bronze medal in 2022. Germany also participated in the Olympics with a total of three-quarter finals, in 1984, 1992, and 2020.

Germany announced their 18-player roster for the FIBA World Cup 2023 on June 12, 2023. The squad includes Isaac Bonga, Oscar da Silva, Niels Giffey, Maxi Kleber, David Krämer, Leon Kratzer, Maodo Lô, Andreas Obst, Justus Hollatz, Dennis Schröder, Christian Sengfelder, Johannes Thiemann, Daniel Theis, Johannes Voigtmann, Franz Wagner, Moritz Wagner, Nick Weiler-Babb, and Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann. Germany will start its world cup campaign on August 25 2023 against Japan at Okinawa Arena, Okinawa, Japan.

The German team has 4 NBA players in the team. Maxi Kleber from the Dallas Mavericks, Daniel Theis from the Indiana Pacers, Franz Wagner, and Moritz Wagner from the Orlando Magic. There are players in Germany’s World Cup squad with prior NBA experience. Some of them are mentioned below:

• Isaac Bonga played for both the NBA and NBA G League. He played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers (2018-2019), Washington Wizards (2019-2021), and Toronto Raptors (2021-22). He also played in the NBA G League for the South Bay Lakers (2018-2019), and for the Raptors 905 (2021-22).

• David Krämer played for the Northern Arizona Suns from 2019-2020.

• Another NBA league player is Dennis Schröder. He played for the Atlanta Hawks (2013-2018), Oklahoma City Thunder (2018-2020), Los Angeles Lakers (2020-2021), Boston Celtics (2021-22), Houston Rockets (2022), and Los Angeles Lakers (2022-23). He also played for the Bakersfield Jam (NBA G League) in 2013.

• Nick Weiler-Babb played for the Miami Heat in the NBA summer league.

Germany has produced a number of world-class NBA players, from the legendary Dirk Nowitzki to Daniel Theis, Maxi Kleber, and others, who have represented their country in international games and tournaments.
