How have Darius Garland's stats fared after another star joined the Cleveland Cavaliers? All you need to know

Cleveland Cavaliers v Washington Wizards
Cleveland Cavaliers star Darius Garland

Darius Garland had a breakout season in 2021-2022, his third year in the NBA. The fifth overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft averaged 21.7 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, 8.6 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game, and 0.1 blocks per game. Garland shot 46.2% from the field, 38.3% from three-point range, and 89.2% from the free-throw line.

While the Cleveland Cavaliers were ahead of schedule, it was apparent that they needed offensive help. The Cavaliers finished last season ranked fifth in opponents points per game and seventh in defensive rating. However, they were just 25th in points per game and 20th in offensive rating.

Cleveland decided to add offensive help by swinging a blockbuster deal for three-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell this past offseason. Garland's season began with turmoil as he was forced to leave the Cavaliers opener after just 13 minutes and missed six of the next seven games.

In his 28 games played since returning from his injury, Garland has averaged 22.1 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 8.0 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game, and 0.1 blocks per game. The fourth-year guard has shot 44.7% from the field, 39.8% from three-point range, and 87.9% from the free-throw line. Garland scored a career-high 51 points in his sixth game back.

Darius Garland's stats compared to his teammate Donovan Mitchell's stats

Darius Garland has shown that he can still produce despite no longer being the Cleveland Cavaliers' number one option. Including the season opening game in which he played just 13 minutes, Garland has averaged 21.4 points per game, 2.7 rebounds per game, 7.8 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game, and 0.2 blocks per game. The one-time All-Star has shot 44.4% from the field, 39.6% from three-point range, and 87.9% from the free-throw line.

While Garland is having a strong season, Donovan Mitchell has been even better, as he is eighth in the NBA in scoring. Mitchell is averaging a career-high 28.5 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, 4.5 assists per game, 1.4 steals per game, and 0.4 blocks per game. The three-time All-Star is shooting 49.2% from the field, 41.8% from three-point range, and 88.2% from the free-throw line, all career-highs.

The Cavaliers are still struggling to score as a team, as they rank just 26th in points per game. However, they are ranked 11th in offensive rating. Cleveland's defense is currently leading the NBA in both opponents points per game and defensive rating.
