Russell Westbrook is one of the newest members of the Utah Jazz. However, the veteran point guard may not play a single game for the team from Salt Lake City.

The point guard was sent to the Jazz as part of a 3-team trade that also involved the LA Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves. Unfortunately, for him, it doesn't seem that he will have a big role on his new team.

If Westbrook reaches a buyout agreement with the Utah Jazz by March, he will be eligible for a playoff roster. So, how likely are the Jazz to buy him out?

Utah Jazz will likely buy out Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook is on an expiring contract, so even if the Utah Jazz keep him, they won't have to pay him after this summer. However, he'd be better off reaching a buyout agreement and signing with another team.

Westbrook is very competitive and could be a great fit for a contender. The Jazz, on the other hand, are interested in developing their young players, which is why the former MVP will have a small role on the team.

All things considered, the Jazz will most likely reach a buyout agreement with Westbrook in the next two weeks. This will make the point guard a free agent and he will be able to sign with whatever team offers him a new contract.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the 9-time All-Star will take his time and make a decision after the All-Star break.

The buyout agreement has to be mutual, meaning that both the Utah Jazz and Russell Westbrook have to accept it. The Jazz could also waive the veteran point guard, but would have to pay his remaining salary in this case.

The Jazz are better off with their young players

After a fantastic start to the 2022-23 season, the Utah Jazz are currently 28-30 and in the 11th spot in the Western Conference. Considering how they've played lately, they will most likely tank by the end of the season.

The Jazz have a lot of great young players they could develop into stars. From Walker Kessler to Colin Sexton, the team from Salt Lake City has a bright future.

Even Lauri Markkanen, the best player on the team, is only 25. Due to this, it is very unlikely that Russell Westbrook will stay on the team after February. If he does, he will be a bench warmer who may not play more than 15 minutes per game.
