Third-year Philadelphia 76ers big man Paul Reed got his chance to shine on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets with Sixers superstar center Joel Embiid injured.

Reed was one of five Philly players to score 16-or-more points as the shorthanded Sixers picked up a surprising 115-106 win over Brooklyn. Reed finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks on 7-for-9 (77.8%) shooting in 31 minutes off the bench.

Paul Reed was previously averaging just 8.0 minutes per game, however, he has flashed his high upside in the NBA G League in the past. On that note, here is how he performed during his time in the G League.

After being drafted 58th by the Sixers in 2020, Paul Reed was signed to a two-way contract by Philadelphia. This meant that he would split time between the Sixers and their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

In his first season with the Blue Coats, Reed had a dominant season. He averaged 22.3 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game on 58.8% shooting in 15 games. These numbers helped him win the G League’s 2020-2021 Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards.

In doing so, Reed became the first Delaware player to win either award. Reed also helped lead the Blue Coats to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

Reed's impressive play also led the Sixers to convert his two-way contract to a standard NBA contract on March 26, 2021. Sixers president Daryl Morey spoke very highly of Reed's potential at the time.

"Paul has proven himself at every level and I expect the NBA to be next," Morey said.
"The G League MVP almost always goes to veteran players with experience as a professional. For him to win in his rookie season shows the incredible NBA potential he has," Morey continued.

Reed also played in nine games for the Delaware Blue Coats last season. Reed averaged 22.3 points, 13.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.8 blocks per game on 57.3% shooting. Overall, Reed’s elite performance in the G League made it clear that he deserves a real chance in the NBA.
