Julian Philips was born on November 5, 2003, in Killeen, Texas, United States. He began playing basketball at Blythewood High School in Blythewood, South California. Currently, he is playing as a college basketball player for the Tennessee Volunteers of the Southeastern Conference.
Born and raised in Killeen, Texas, United States, Julian relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, where his parents, who were servants of the U.S. Army, were stationed. His parents were posted at Fort Jackson, an Army installation in Columbia, South Carolina. Julian initially joined Blythewood High School in Blythewood, South Carolina. After his junior year at Blythewood, he moved to Link Prep Academy in Branson, Missouri. Julian played in the 2022 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game as a senior.
Julian Phillips was considered one of the top 20 players of the 2022 class by the major recruiting services. First, he signed a National Letter of Intent to play college basketball for LSU. The head coach of the LSU Tigers men’s basketball team was fired from the team. Due to this, Julian requested a release from his NLI and reopened his recruitment.
Later, Julian decided to play college basketball at Tenessee after considering Auburn and South Carolina offers. He also played basketball professionally in the NBA G League. During his freshman season, Julian averaged 13.3 points per game and was named to the 2022 Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament team. As a freshman, he participated in 32 games, averaging 8.3 points and 4.7 points per game. Following the freshman season, Julian Phillips entered the 2023 NBA draft while playing college basketball.
