Jacque T. Vaughn was born in Los Angeles, California on February 11, 1975. Vaughn started as a player in the NBA after being selected as the 27th overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA draft. Throughout his 12-year career in the NBA, Vaughn played for teams such as the Utah Jazz, the Atlanta Hawks, the Orlando Magic, the New Jersey Nets, and the San Antonio Spurs. During the 2006-07 NBA season, Vaughn appeared in 82 games for the Spurs and won the NBA Championship. Retiring after the 2008-09 NBA season, he joined the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff as an assistant coach. He was then named as the Orlando Magic's head coach on July 28, 2012. After being fired by the Magic in 2015, Vaughn spent the 2015-16 season scouting for the Spurs before joining Brooklyn Net's assistant coach.

After Atkinson's departure, Vaughn was named the Nets' interim head coach. He was then hired as an assistant coach under Steve Nash. After Nash was fired by the Nets, Vaughn was named their interim head coach on November 1, 2022. On November 9, 2022, he was named as the Nets' head coach. Due to the Nets' bad performance (21-33) in the 2023-24 season, Vaughn was fired.
