Young started his basketball career at St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown before transferring to DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Graduating in 2019 as a three-star recruit, he embarked on his collegiate basketball career with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As a freshman with the Charlotte 49ers, he earned impressive accolades, being named Third Team All-Conference USA (C-USA) and Freshman of the Year. His freshman season was marked by solid performances, averaging 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. A highlight of his early career came in January 2022, when he recorded a career-high 30 points against Florida Atlantic.

Over five college basketball seasons, he appeared in 152 games, starting in every single one, and maintained impressive averages of 17.3 points, 3.3 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game. Despite going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, Young seized the opportunity to showcase his skills with the Denver Nuggets during the Summer League. In July 2024, Young signed an exhibit-10 contract with the Denver Nuggets, a significant milestone in his professional basketball journey.
