The 6-foot point guard, Jamal Shead, played collegiate basketball for the Houston Cougars in the Big 12 conference. Born in Austin, Texas, Shead showed talent from his high school days, leading his school to their first state tournament appearance. He also helped them win the 18-5A District title in his senior year, averaging 19.3 points and 4.3 assists per game.

As a three-star recruit, Shead committed to play college basketball for the Cougars over offers from Texas A&M and Colorado State. During his four years with the Cougars, Jamal played alongside several NBA first-round draft picks, including Jarace Walker, Quentin Grimes, and Marcus Sasser. Despite being surrounded by star players, Shead made his own way and cemented himself as the starting point guard in his sophomore year.

Shead is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, earning the honor in the AAC conference in 2023 and the Big 12 conference in 2024. He made several All-Tournament conference teams in both the AAC and the Big 12 and was named to the first and second teams in the regular season. Additionally, he made the Consensus All-American first team and was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2024, joining previous winners like Matisse Thybulle and Walker Kessler.

The point guard declared for the 2023 NBA Draft but returned to play his senior year. Leading the Cougars to their maiden Big 12 regular season trophy, averaging 12.9 points, 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game. He won Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 2024, becoming the first player to achieve both honors in the same season.

Shead made 200 or more assists in three consecutive years, leading the conference twice and finishing second in his senior year. He is considered a mid-second-round pick around 45 to 49 but his excellent ball pressure on defense and playmaking ability may help his draft stock.
