In 2020, Johnson spent part of the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks later that same year. In 2021, he played for the New Orleans Pelicans. He then joined the Brooklyn Nets for the 2021–2022 season. Since 2022, James Johnson has been a member of the Indiana Pacers and continues contributing as a veteran leader.
