James Monteinez Wiseman is an American professional basketball player, currently playing position 5 for the Detroit Pistons. He was picked with the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He notably won a championship ring with the Warriors in the 2021-22 season, despite having sat out the season due to a knee injury. Wiseman was traded to the Detroit Pistons in the middle of the 2022-23 season, on February 9, 2023.

In the 2022/23 season, he played 45 games for the Warriors and Pistons combined, averaging 10.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. He shot 55.8% from the field, including 20.0% from deep end.

He played college ball for the Memphis Tigers, where he unwittingly got embroiled in a NCAA booster controversy. Regardless, his talent was recognized from his time, which eventually led to the 2nd overall pick by the Warriors. In fact, he even won a gold medal for Team USA at the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina.

Wiseman will be looking to make a deep postseason run with his new team in the 2023/24 season.

James Wiseman Trade

After two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, on February 9, 2023, the team traded him to the Detroit Pistons through a four team trade process also involving the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers. In return, as per Spotrac, the Warriors received a second round pick from 2026 and another second round pick from 2028 from the Hawks. They also got Gary Payton II from the Blazers.

James Wiseman’s college basketball career

James Wiseman enrolled at the University of Memphis and played collegiate basketball for the Memphis Tigers. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury sidelined from the preseason games in 2019/20. However, he had to face legal issues due to the NCAA which considered him eligible to play for Memphis. They considered the efforts of head coach Penny Hardaway, a Memphis alumnus, to be those of a booster since he had been coaching Wiseman since his high school days.

Eventually, he overcame the legal difficulties and suspensions, to play the remainder of the season with the Memphis Tigers. In 3 games, he scored 59 points, 39 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 9 blocks. He shot 76.9% from the field. He left the Tigers and prepared for the 2020 NBA draft, and was eventually drafted by the Golden State Warriors as the second overall pick in the draft.
