On June 28, 2007, Green was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. He was later traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he joined a talented young core that included Kevin Durant.

After spending his first three seasons in Seattle/Oklahoma City, Green was traded back to Boston in 2011. He spent just one partial season with the Celtics before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2012.

In 2017, Green signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, joining LeBron James on a team that reached the NBA Finals that season. Next season, Green was traded to the Washington Wizards, where he averaged around 12.3 points per game.

Green then had short stints with the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets before joining the Brooklyn Nets in 2020. With the Nets, Green averaged 11.0 points per game, and this was one of his best seasons. He also helped the team advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Green's journeyman career has now spanned over 16 seasons and 11 different franchises. In the 2022/23 season, Green played 56 games for the Denver Nuggets, averaging 7.8 points 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Green finally enjoyed the ultimate triumph, winning his first NBA championship with the Denver Nuggets in 2023.
