Syracuse has announced that its longtime coach Jim Boeheim will be ending his career. Associate head coach Adrian "Red" Autry will take over as head coach starting next season.
In a statement issued by the school, Autry spoke about Boeheim's impact:
"There have been very few stronger influential forces in my life than Syracuse University and Jim Boeheim. They have both played such important roles and without either of them, I am certain I would not have this incredible opportunity before me.
"I have spent much of my time in the game of basketball learning from Jim and am so grateful to him for preparing me to carry on the winning tradition that is Orange Basketball. It's hard to imagine a world without him on the bench, but together with our coaches, student-athletes and fans, we will build on decades of success as a winning program."
Boeheim will end his 47-year career at his alma mater this season. He's retiring as a men's college basketball icon, winning the national championship in 2003 among five Final Four trips and being named the Naismith Coach of the Year in 2010. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Due to his long stay with the team, he was able to get a huge amount of wins for Syracuse. Boeheim will be ending his NCAA coaching career with a record of 1,015 - 440, which is all under Syracuse. His excellence and legacy will forever be remembered by the university.
Which NBA stars have played for Jim Boeheim?
There have been great names that have started making names for themselves in the college scene. Just like other colleges, Syracuse has produced some of the best players who have made it all the way into the NBA. Here are some of the best players to come out of the famed college.
Michael Carter-Williams
Michael Carter-Williams only spent two years in college before getting drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013. He finished his first year in the NBA winning the 2013-14 Rookie of the Year, but has struggled to reach his full potential. Still, MCW is a player that's memorable for most fans.
Jerami Grant
Similar to Carter-Williams, Jerami Grant spent two years in college. Statistically, though, his college career was a bit better, that is. He's now known as a valuable defensive wing for the Portland Trail Blazers, giving them a boost defensively.
He's also one of the best offensive players right now.
Carmelo Anthony
Possibly the most recognizable name in the history of Syracuse, Carmelo Anthony has emerged as one of the best players to play the game.
Anthony only played one season, but it was memorable for Jim Boeheim as they won the championship during that time.
