Josh Green

Joshua Green, more commonly known as Josh Green, is an Australian professional basketball player currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks. Born to Australian-American parents, Green had an early inkling for basketball from a very young age. He started playing basketball at the age of five and was initially coached by his mother. Green was a multi-sport marvel in his youth.

By age 10, he had been selected to represent his home state in a whopping nine different sports. He fully committed to basketball and soon afterward, he started training to turn pro. He attended King’s High School in Sydney and was so far above the competition that he was chosen to play for his state’s under-16 team at just the age of 13.

In order to play tougher competition and focus more on his basketball career, Green and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2015 where Green enrolled at the Mountain Ridge High School. Green soon transferred to the IMG Academy in Florida and led his team to the national championship while also being named the championship game MVP. He was a consensus five-star recruit and had a plethora of choices from multiple colleges.

In 2018, Green committed to playing for the Arizona Wildcats while receiving offers from Villanova, North Carolina, and Kansas. Green had a stellar season for the Wildcats, averaging 12 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 36% from 3-point range. He impressed a lot of scouts with his athleticism and defense. Following his only year at Arizona, Green declared for the 2020 NBA draft.

Green was picked by the Dallas Mavericks as the 18th overall pick and has been on the team ever since. He initially was a third-stringer on the team, only getting minutes when the game had entered blowout territory. But, as he got more playing time and impressed the coaches with his work ethic, Green became a part of the regular rotation with the Mavericks.

He became a regular spot-up shooter and was one of the favorite targets for the Mavericks’ star point guard, Luka Doncic. Not only did Green impress with his shooting, but he was also impressed with his defense. His defense was his calling card when he entered the league. Standing at 6’7 and weighing about 200 lbs, Green is built to be an NBA defender. Whenever he checks into the game, he usually takes the assignment of guarding the best perimeter player. Currently, Green is in his fourth season in the league and this time, he can cement his place in the Mavericks starting lineup with his 3-and-D playstyle which they desperately need.

Josh Green’s Australian career

Josh Green was named to the Australian team’s 24-man roster to play in the FIBA Qualifiers in 2018. However, he couldn’t go ahead due to a labrum in his right shoulder preventing him from participating in the tournament. He subsequently represented Australia in the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in 2019 and then went on the be a part of the bronze medal-winning team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It is the country’s only medal at the Olympics in basketball. He was also recently chosen to represent the men’s senior national team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
