During his 14-year professional playing career, from 1990 to 2004, he had stays abroad in Amsterdam, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. In his final season at Richmond, Atkinson averaged 18.9 points per game. In the summer of 1991, he tried out for several NBA teams, including the Knicks, as he went undrafted in the 1990 NBA Draft. In 2020, he was admitted to the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame.
