Kevin Porter Jr. is a professional basketball player who joined the NBA in 2019 as a promising young talent. He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 30th overall pick in the NBA draft. However, his rights were quickly traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a draft-day deal. Porter Jr. joined a rebuilding Cavs team eager to develop young players like him.

Showing potential in his rookie season, Porter Jr. played in 50 games for the Cavs in 2019-20, starting just three. He posted modest averages of 10 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 23.8 minutes per game. However, the team and fans caught exciting glimpses of his scoring prowess and playmaking ability.

Entering his second season in 2020-21, expectations rose for the young wing. But Porter Jr. only appeared in 26 games for Cleveland that year before off-court issues cut his season short. In January 2021, the Cavs traded the troubled Porter Jr. to the Houston Rockets in exchange for a heavily protected future second-round pick.

The rebuilding Rockets took a chance on Porter Jr.’s evident talent. Their patience with him through the ups and downs ultimately paid off. Given ample playing time and shot attempts, Porter Jr. thrived in 2021-22 for Houston. He competed in 61 games and averaged 15.6 points, 6.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. His efficiency and decision-making still needed work, but the promise was evident.

In the 2022-23 season, Porter Jr. took his game to a new level for the Rockets. He played and started in 59 games, averaging 19.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists as one of the team’s primary playmakers. He shot 44% from the field and 37% from three-point range – by far his best NBA season to date. Still only 23 years old, Rockets fans were extremely excited for his future.

However, Porter Jr.’s promising trajectory in Houston came to an abrupt halt in October 2022. Following disturbing allegations of domestic violence, the Rockets dismissed Porter Jr. just prior to the 2022-23 regular season. The Oklahoma City Thunder soon claimed him on waivers but released him as well without Porter Jr. ever suiting up for the team.
