LeBron Jameshas taken up another important responsibility en-route to being the biggest names in the NBA. The King was unanimously elected as the Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association, during the union’s annual meeting during the All-Star Weekend. Chris Paul, the President of the Association urged LeBron to take up the position in order to voice his opinion on player related issues.
Last year the league signed a new TV deal with ESPN/ABC and Turner Network Television to keep the game on these two channels till 2025. The contract which is valid from the 2016-17 season is worth $2.67 billion per year, an increase of $1.74 billion per year. Now as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), close to half of NBA’s basketball related income is set aside for player salary.
With the league slated to make a lot more money there is bound to be an uproar from the players demanding more money to be put aside for their income and who better to lead the players than James as the Vice President. He wanted to be deeply involved with the league during its collective bargaining talks with the players association.
Players or owners opt out of the CBA in 2016-17, which is what the circumstances seem to be pointing at. In that case James’ presence with the union will have a huge influence on how their talks go with the league. .
