However, the Hawks traded for Trae Young who was drafted as the fifth overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks and Luka Doncic joined the Mavs. The Slovenian guard won the 2019 Rookie of the Year and made five consecutive All-NBA first-team and All-Star appearances. Doncic has also finished top-5 in MVP voting on three occasions.

In the 2023-24 season, Luka Doncic broke many historical records and had the best season of his career as he led the Mavs to their first Finals appearance since 2011. He averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds 9.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, shooting 48.7% from the field. He scored 21 triple-doubles (third most in the league), led the league in scoring, third in total assists, and 18th in total rebounds. He also scored a 73-point double-double against the Hawks which is the most efficient 70-point game in the history of the NBA as per Basketball Reference.
