What position does Luka Doncic play?

Luka Doncic is one of the most prominent players in the NBA today. His tremendous offensive skill set has separated him from the cluster of NBA players, making him one of the best players in NBA today.

The Mavericks superstar was drafted with the 3rd overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2018 NBA draft, before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in the legendary draft night trade which saw Trae Young and Luka Doncic swap teams. Doncic made an immediate impact ever since he set foot into the league.

Luka Doncic quickly became the centerpiece of the Dallas Mavericks franchise as the team started running a helio-centric offense where Doncic controlled everything and led the league in usage rate for multiple seasons. This led to Doncic putting up some historic numbers and earned him multiple All-Star and first-team all-NBA honors. In 2022, Doncic led the Mavericks to their first conference finals appearance since 2011. However, the Mavericks would end up losing to the Golden State Warriors in five games.

Luka Doncic is listed as a point guard according to the NBA. Although he truly embodies the positionless basketball that is played in today’s NBA and can operate as a shooting guard, Luka usually plays as PG. Standing at 6’7 and weighing about 220 lbs, Doncic has the body of an NBA forward. However, this is truly a conundrum for other NBA teams as when Doncic is playing at point guard, it is a complete mismatch for the other team. He is too big and strong will overpower a traditional point guard and is too quick for a traditional forward.

Doncic technically operates in this grey area where he is a guard trapped in a forward body. In his rookie year, Doncic was listed as a shooting guard, but as he started handling the ball more, and became the primary initiator of the offense for the Mavericks, the NBA started listing him as a point guard.
