Malik Monk is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Sacramento Kings in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1998, Monk played basketball throughout his high school career at Bentonville High School in Bentonville, Arkansas. He led his team to three straight state championship games, winning two titles in 2014 and 2015. His strong high school performances earned him recognition as a consensus five-star recruit and a spot in the 2016 McDonald's All-American Game.
After high school, Monk attended the University of Kentucky, where he played one season of college basketball for the Wildcats. At Kentucky, he started in all 38 games and averaged 19.8 points per game, earning consensus second-team All-American honors by major media outlets. Monk declared for the 2017 NBA draft after his freshman season. He was selected with the 11th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets.
Monk played his first four NBA seasons with the Hornets as a combo guard coming off the bench. He showed flashes of scoring brilliance, like his career-high 36 points against the Milwaukee Bucks in 2019, but struggled to find consistent minutes. After his rookie contract expired, Monk signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021. He had a career year with the Lakers, averaging 13.8 points per game, operating primarily as a 3-point specialist.
In 2022, Monk signed a two-year, $19 million contract with the Sacramento Kings, reuniting him with his former Kentucky teammate De'Aaron Fox.
