March Madness

Introduction

Millions of Americans are going to fail as they fill out their March Madness brackets over the coming days. It's nothing to be embarrassed about, as college basketball's massive single-elimination structure allows for unexpected upsets that can disrupt the predictions of even the most seasoned college basketball fan. However, with just a few minutes of effort, any new game selection should be able to figure out one component: the group name. The NCAA tournament is interesting because most bracket pickers obviously don't spend those few minutes.

To make the NCAA Tournament more entertaining, supporters come up with humorous March Madness bracket titles each year. Even though college basketball is changing, creating a bracket is still one of the sport's most enduring rituals.

Millions of copies are created yearly as supporters attempt to select the most accurate candidates. Some make more rational choices, while others make a well-informed estimate about the upcoming Cinderella tale. The fun also includes coming up with creative March Madness bracket titles. The NCAA Tournament is finally here in 2024; on Selection Sunday, March 17, we will learn which colleges will compete for the championship. The first events of the first round are scheduled to start on March 19 and 20 after that, which will kick off the action.

The competition will continue into April after the rest of March. The NCAA championship contest will occur on April 8.

What (and when) is Selection Sunday?

Every year, March Madness begins on Selection Sunday. The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee unveils the 68-team bracket for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament during a nationally broadcast event, which normally takes place in mid-March, on the Sunday before the tournament starts.

There are 68 teams in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament; the selection committee chooses 36 teams to receive at-large bids, while the other 32 teams earn automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments.

As a result, the announcement of the teams chosen for tournament berths takes place on Selection Sunday. The 2024 Men’s March Madness Selection Sunday is March 17.

When is this year's March Madness men's tournament?

The 2024 March Madness tournament began on Selection Sunday, March 17, 2024, followed by the First Four event on March 19 and 20. The event will conclude with the NCAA championship game, which will take place on April 8, 2024, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Origins of Bracket Names

Since at least 1939, when the term first appeared in an article by Henry Porter, an Illinois high school athletics administrator, basketball contests have been referred to as March Madness. Unsurprisingly, eight teams competed in the inaugural NCAA men's collegiate basketball championship in 1939; however, it would take close to another 50 years for the event to become known as March Madness.

Before becoming popular elsewhere in the Midwest, March Madness was first used for Illinois basketball championships in the 1940s.

The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament then started to be known as March Madness in the 1980s. Many attribute its widespread use to announcer Brent Musburger, who used it to describe especially wild games during the NCAA tournament coverage and was familiar with the phrase from covering the Illinois state championships.

The word "March Madness" was ultimately trademarked by the NCAA. It is now used to refer to and advertise the tournament, which is renowned for its numerous, frequently thrilling games (67 between 68 teams), such as certain buzzer-beating, bracket-busting upsets. Even though the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament is occasionally called March Madness, the NCAA does not use this moniker for formal marketing purposes.
