Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown is among the most popular names in the NBA who over the years grew in prominence to become one of the many great head coaches in basketball history. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Brown grew up admiring Basketball and American football and got better in the sport at an early age. While studying abroad at Wurzburg American High School in Germany, he developed his sports potential by excelling in both sports but eventually chose to commit to Basketball.
Having played college basketball at Mesa Community College and the University of San Diego as a standout point guard, Brown passed on the possibility of playing professionally and instead, committed to one day becoming the best basketball coach in the league.
How old is Mike Brown?
Mike Brown is 53 years old, as of October 2023. He was born on March 5, 1970. After graduating from the University of San Diego with a decent career average of 8.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.8 steals a game, one would have expected Brown to pursue a professional career either in the G League or overseas.
But he decided to get into the management side of things and began as a player scout and video coordinator for the Denver Nuggets. It wasn't until 1997 where Brown landed his first assistant coaching position under Bernie Bickerstaff for the Washington Wizards.
After being let go from the Wizards, Brown was viewed as a remarkable replacement and brought in by the San Antonio Spurs as assistant coach alongside Gregg Popovich. At San Antonio, Brown was an effective presence along with coach Popovich and the overall coaching staff. From 2000 to 2003, the Spurs reached the Playoffs three consecutive times and won the Conference title and the NBA title in the 2002-03 season.
In 2003, he joined the Indiana Pacers and followed a similar approach to coaching he cultivated during his time with the Spurs. Under the mentorship of another all-time great head coach in Rick Carlisle, Brown helped guide Indiana to consecutive deep playoff runs in 2004 and 2005.
After a productive short stint with the Pacers, Brown got picked to become the new head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005. The Cavaliers were in rough shape before Brown became their head coach as they hadn’t qualified for the playoffs in seven years. Fortunately, all that changed for the better immediately. In his five years as head coach in Cleveland, the Cavaliers reached the conference finals and semifinals twice and the finals one time where they lost to a dominant Spurs team 0-4.
Brown had a couple of short stints with the Lakers (2011-12) and the Cavaliers (2013-14) before being appointed as the Assistant head coach for the Golden State Warriors in 2016. He stayed with the Warriors up until 2022 and added four conference championships and three NBA championships to his resume.
Currently, Mike Brown is the head coach for the Sacramento Kings. This past season he was instrumental in leading the Kings into their first playoff series since 2007 which earned him NBCA and NBA Coach of the Year honors.
