The Memphis Grizzlies' journey began in 1995 when they were established as the Vancouver Grizzlies before relocating to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2001. They hold a unique distinction as the only team in all major North American sports leagues to call Memphis home.

A pivotal moment in franchise history occurred during the 2001 NBA draft when the Atlanta Hawks selected Pau Gasol as the third overall pick, subsequently trading him to the Grizzlies.

This trade proved monumental, as Spanish superstar Gasol became the face of the Memphis team, leading them to multiple playoff appearances from 2004 to 2006. Gasol's eventual trade to the Lakers, which included his younger brother Marc Gasol, further solidified the Grizzlies' identity.

During the 2011 to 2017 period, the Grizzlies adopted the "grit 'n' grind" mantra, embodying a tough, unyielding style of play characterized by relentless defense. Led by Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph in the frontcourt, and Mike Conley and the revered Tony Allen in the backcourt, they became known league-wide for their defensive prowess. Allen, affectionately nicknamed "The Grindfather," epitomized the team's hard-nosed approach, earning adoration from fans and respect from opponents alike.

Following the conclusion of the grit 'n' grind era, the Grizzlies underwent a period of rebuilding, eventually acquiring talents like Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., who now lead the team into a new era.

Owned by Memphis Basketball LLC, chaired by Robert Pera, the Grizzlies play their home games at the FedExForum, with FedEx serving as their primary sponsor. With a rich history and a passionate fan base, the Grizzlies continue to leave an indelible mark on the NBA landscape.

Memphis Grizzlies NBA Finals Appearance History

In their 35 years of experience, the Memphis Grizzlies have never made it to the NBA Finals. Their best NBA playoff performance is reaching the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 1993, 1998, 2001, and 2002.

In 1993, led by “Big Momma” Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, Hornets reached the NBA playoffs for the first time in their franchise history and went onto win their first-ever playoff series against the Boston Celtics in the first round.

However, their journey was cut short in the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Patrick Ewing-led New York Knicks in five games. In 1998, the Hornets faced an unbeatable force of Chicago Bulls led by Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan as they lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Hornets most notable playoff run came in 2001 when they were led by explosive point guard Baron Davis and great wing talents like Jamal Mashburn and Jamaal Magloire. In the first round, the Hornets swept the Miami Heat.

In the 2001 East semis, Hornets faced the Milwaukee Bucks led by Ray Allen but they lost the series in a hard-fought seven games. In 2002, the Hornets faced a similar fate, reaching the Eastern Conference Semifinals after defeating the Orlando Magic in the first round. However, they were unable to overcome the Jason Kidd-led New Jersey Nets, who defeated them in five games.
