The Sacramento Kings had for years struggled to find a long-term head coach whose approach brought the potential of breaking the team’s playoff-missing streak and bringing the Kings back on the winning track. Fortunately, Michael Burton Brown brought that approach and things immediately shifted for the positive.
Mike Brown’s work as a coach in the NBA has earned him some valuable achievements and recognition over the years, winning four championships as an assistant coach and associate head coach (2003, 2017, 2018, 2022), winning the Coach of the Year honors twice (2009, 2023), and the NBCA coach of the year honor in 2023.
Mike Brown Salary
Mike Brown earns an annual salary of five million dollars. Though he is currently not among the highest-earning coaches in the league, his reputation precedes him. In May 2022, it was reported that the Sacramento Kings and Mike Brown had agreed to a four-year deal which would see Brown stay with the Kings till the 2025-26 regular season. The Kings were the first team to make plans on hiring a new head coach last year and finalized the deal after constant interactions with Brown over the course of two to three weeks.
Brown has a stellar coaching resume. Beginning as an assistant coach in 1997, he served two seasons with the Washington Wizards before being hired by the San Antonio Spurs in 2000. Brown learned some valuable insights on the specifics and responsibilities of coaching under coach Pop and helped guide the Spurs to their second NBA championship in 2003.
After a three-year stint with the Spurs, Brown joined the Indiana Pacers coaching staff led by head coach Rick Carlisle. From 2003 to 2005, Brown was actively involved in the process of team management and assisted Carlisle in building a strong playoff team capable of reaching the finals.
In 2005, the Cleveland Cavaliers were in desperate need of a strong head coach so brought Brown on board in the hopes of turning things around for the better. Being the second youngest individual to guide an NBA team at the time, Brown brought his defensive knowledge and proved his worth in that category. In his five years at Cleveland, Brown coached his team to no less than second place in the Eastern Conference Central division and became the first head coach in franchise history to lead the Cavaliers to the NBA finals in 2007.
After coaching the Los Angeles Lakers for just 71 games, Brown returned to Cleveland on a five-year $20 Million deal but was let go for the second time in four years after only one season. Brown then joined the Golden State Warriors and spent eight years with the team as both assistant and associate head coach. Brown on occasion even coached the Warriors in crucial series wins when Steve Kerr was absent due to health issues. Brown was well respected at Golden State and is dearly regarded in Sacramento as well.
After ending his first year at Sacramento on a high note, Brown will look to bring more strength to the team's defensive commitments and boost an already good offense. His continued presence with the Kings may bring along further positive changes within the Kings' organization.
