Born on August 26, 1999, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Naz Reid is a 24-year-old 6 foot 9 inch big who plays as a backup center for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Known for his elite 3-point shooting, Reid has the ability to stretch the floor and is a complimentary piece to both Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Subsequently, the Minnesota Timberwolves signed him on a two-way contract, and he played for the Iowa Wolves in the G-League where he impressed the management to the point that he was able to sign a rookie contract after just 16 days with the Timberwolves.

As a five-star recruit coming out of high school, Reid got offers from Arizona and UCLA to play collegiate basketball. The New Jersey native played one season of college ball at Louisiana State University (LSU). As a five-star recruit and the third-best power forward coming out of high school by ESPN, he had offers from Arizona, Kansas, and UCLA, but decided to commit to LSU. Upon joining the program, he said “I chose LSU because it fits my style of play.”

During his freshman season, Reid averaged 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, leading the team in rebounds and second in points. He had multiple 20-point games, with a career-high being 29 points against UNC Greensboro in the regular season. Reid also posted eight double-doubles in the regular season, being a dominant force around the glass and showing promising skills with good potential.

LSU was the third seed in the NCAA tournament, defeating 14th seed Yale in the first round where he had a double-double consisting of 14 points and 10 rebounds on 55% shooting. They then defeated sixth-seed Maryland in the second round but lost to second-seed Michigan State in the Sweet 16, where Reid scored 10 points and nine rebounds. On April 3, 2019, Reid declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

Naz Reid Draft

After Naz Reid declared for the 2019 NBA Draft, he was projected to go as an early second-round pick in most of the mock drafts. However, he went undrafted due to not having a very good NBA draft combine. He was then signed on a two-way contract by the Timberwolves and played for their G-league associate the Iowa Wolves. Reid’s dominance in the G-league and Towns’ injury forced the Timberwolves to sign him on a rookie contract and he never looked back after that, becoming a solid backup who has the versatility to play center as well as power forward.

Naz Reid Position

Naz Reid, blending the skills of a guard with the stature of a center/forward, exhibits exceptional ball control and speed, affording him an advantage over opposing centers to score at the rim. Furthermore, he provides the Minnesota Timberwolves with a dynamic pick-and-roll option and demonstrates proficiency as a catch-and-shoot 3-point shooter, who is shooting 41.4% from deep in the 2023/24 season as of May 2024.
