NBA Finals : Miami Not this time

Achal

2009

It was for the first time since 1971 that the finals featured both the teams playing for their first NBA finals series. The 2006 NBA finals saw Dallas and Miami fighting for their first title. Since 1998, it was the first finals not to have either the Lakers or Spurs, and also the only one of the 2000s decade.

The Heat made their way to the Finals by defeating Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Mavs won the Western crown over the two-time MVP Steve Nash and his team Phoenix Suns.

The first two games were won by the Dallas, led by Dirk Nowitzki. Along with Shaquille O’Neal, Dwayne Wade led his team in their next four games, winning their first NBA title. Dwayne Wade was name the Most Valuable Player of the series.

Miami also became the third team to win a championship after trailing 0-2 in the series.

“Iss baar toh Miami jeetegi” – was what my friends said. And when I asked them why, their answer would be ‘because of the big three – LeBron, Wade and Bosh.’ Always supporting my favourite, I replied to them, “It will be Lakers again.”

But my expectations were broken when Dallas swept the Lakers 4-0. They then defeated the Thunders in the Western Finals. On the Eastern side, it was Boston and Chicago who were expected to give a tough fight to the Heat. But the big three made it simple by first winning over Boston (4-1) and then Chicago (4-1) in the conference finals.

Dallas were thought to be the underdogs as compared to the Miami. But, they did not wanted it to go off like 2006. The first game was won by the Heat. Dallas stunned the Heat by winning game 2. Miami won the next game, taking the lead. Series was tied when Dallas won game 4. In the next two games, the Dallas’ long wait was over. They were the NBA champions.

Along with Dirk Nowitzki , who was adjudged the finals MVP, other players also gave their best on court – Jason Terry was on fire throughout the series, the ‘ageless wonder’ Jason Kidd did what he is known for – got assists and also nailed some jumpers from the perimeter. Essential contribution also came from JJ Barea, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler, and others.

Lastly, all the heartbreak and anguish over the last five years was finally vindicated for Dallas Mavericks.

2012

“Congrats Mavs. Next year the rings will be back in LA.” Tweeted Lakers forward Ron Artest.

So, who you think will win the next title?
