News surrounding the 2023 NBA draft

The excitement around the 2023 NBA draft is starting to build with the end of the regular season nearing. Fan bases of teams that won't be in the playoffs are starting to count down the days until the NBA's draft lottery on May 16.

One of the biggest developments throughout the 2022-23 NBA season has been the ongoing CBA negotiations. The current deal is set to expire after the 2023-24 season. This means that both the players association and the league are trying to get a new deal in place to avoid any potential lockout talks.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on those talks, specifically focusing on future draft news. According to the NBA insider, the NBA and NBAPA aren't pursuing a change in the minimum draft age rule. That means that the "one-and-done" idea is going to stay firm for future NBA draft classes.

The news shouldn't be too surprising to NBA fans and the desire for the league to keep the "one-and-done" rule. There had been some speculation over recent years that the league could move to allow high schoolers to jump immediately into the NBA.

The rule was first established for the 2006 NBA draft. It requires that high school players must wait a full year after graduation before they are eligible to put their name in the NBA draft. That usually involves players playing one year at the collegiate level before declaring after their freshman season.

Other routes have started to open up for players who are looking to spend their post-high school years working on their games. Teams such as the G League Ignite and Overtime Elite have started to grow in popularity. Their goal is to allow players to develop their talents for a full year in preparation for the NBA.

The 2023 NBA draft will include a number of projected top 10 picks who have joined those exact teams. These players include Scoot Henderson (G League Ignite), Ausar Thompson (Overtime Elite) and Amen Thompson (Overtime Elite). Other G League Ignite players who could be selected in the first round include Sidy Cissoko and Leonard Miller.

The idea of eliminating the "one-and-done" rule was something that was going to be challenging, especially for the NBAPA. Current NBA players are most likely going to be turned away at the idea of a high schooler stealing their spot on an active roster. For now, it looks as if the league is comfortable with keeping their draft requirements the same for the future.
