Defending NBA champions Boston Celtics could be up for sale, and its potential buyer could be a Super Bowl-bound owner. According to 'The Ringer's NBA analyst Bill Simmons, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is interested in purchasing the Celtics.
Simmons, who is an avid Celtics fan, said on Sunday that Lurie was a finalist in the historic franchise’s purchase after bids were due last week. Lurie is said to be from the state of Massachusetts, where Boston is.
“Four or five people made the first round. One of the people was the Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie, who is apparently from Massachusetts…There's been a couple of, 'Hmm, I wonder who these guys are?' And there was a couple I couldn't figure out. But that's one that is in the mix," Simmons said in his podcast.
Lurie has been the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1994. The Eagles will be gunning for its second NFL championship since Lurie took ownership when they face the Kansas City Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 in New Orleans.

“The Kroenkes own the Nuggets and they own the Rams. So there’s been a couple of NBA/NFL things. But I always thought the Eagles were one of the best-run football teams, right? So if he bought the Celtics, that’s a decent outcome,” Simmons said.
Lurie, who is currently 73 years old, was born in Boston and has amassed a wealth of over $5 billion, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
The Celtics were up for sale following the team’s win in the 2024 NBA Finals, where they picked up their league-best 18th NBA championship. The Celtics are owned by the Grousbeck family since purchasing the squad in 2002 for $360 million.
Fans react to Jeffrey Lurie’s intention to buy an NBA franchise
NBA fans have since weighed in on the bidding situation. Some went on to say that they like the idea of a Boston native, Lurie, owning the Celtics.
“Sounds good,” one fan said.
“Sounds great to me 🔥,” said another fan.
“He's from boston, Knows the culture... do it?” said another fan.
Others then quipped about the idea of a billionaire owning a franchise in Philadelphia and Boston, both of which are sports rivals.
“I’m sure eagles fans will handle this rationally,” said one fan.
“A Philadelphia base owner going to destroy the Celtics,” said one fan.
“Conflict of interest don’t do it,” said another fan.
Lurie has not gone public about his intention to own the Celtics. As of now, the Celtics are the second seed in the Eastern Conference with a 32-14 record, led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
