Washington Wizards' No.2 pick shines in Summer League debut vs Hawks

Washington Wizards rookie Alex Sarr had a good field day in the team's win against the Atlanta Hawks in the 2k25 Summer League skirmish in Las Vegas. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four blocks as he showed off his versatility on both ends of the floor. The Wizards propped up a 94-88 win, with Sarr getting ample support from Justin Champagnie and Carlton Carrington.

Sarr shot 4-12 from the field and was 2-5 from the three-point line. He made both his free throws, and while the numbers don't necessarily paint the picture, Sarr's game awareness and reading of the situations were a standout.

Carrington led Washington with a game-high 19 points, while Champagnie chipped in with 18. Sarr had 12 and that was enough to get past Hawks' rookie and No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher, who ended his evening with 18 points and five rebounds.

The Washington Wizards will hope that Alex Sarr can be in the same mold as OKC Thunder's Chet Holmgren

The narrative was clear well ahead: Alex Sarr didn't want to lace up for the Hawks as he declined to work out with the franchise. He was soon pipped by Zaccharie Risacher and ended up with the Washington Wizards as the next man up. Earlier, ESPN's Brian Windhorst shed light on the move.

"I have been told that it is not so much that Alex Sarr does not want to play for Atlanta as much as he prefers to play for the Washington Wizards and maybe that is semantics, maybe that is a polite way of saying it, but when you look at the Washington Wizards depth chart and you compare it to the Atlanta Hawks depth chart with Jalen Johnson at the four, De'Andre Hunter, Onyeka Okongwu, Clint Capela, I understand their point of view"

As for the Wizards, who had a forgettable 2023–24 season, they will hope that Sarr can be what Chet Holmgren has transformed into for the OKC Thunder. The latter cemented himself as OKC's defensive component and was vital with his pick-and-pop play. While he is still a work in progress, Sarr displayed enough on that end of the floor to make a case for himself as a powerhouse on defense.

Up next, Alex Sarr will face off against No. 3 pick Reed Sheppard and the Houston Rockets on Sunday, while Risacher and Atlanta take on the San Antonio Spurs on the same day.
