The oldest basketball league in Asia, the PBA or the Philippine Basketball Association, has implemented a 4-point shot in their upcoming 49th season. The PBA is also the second-longest continuously operational basketball league in the world just behind the NBA.

The PBA announced on Monday that they are going to add new rules for Season 49, including the 4-point shot. It's a 27-foot shot from the basket, which was already tested in the last two All-Star games. The addition of the debatable 4-point arc was made to increase more viewers and make the games more exciting.

"It has been successful in the All-Star and the governors decided to make it a new innovation. We'll see," league commissioner Willie Marcial told reporters. [H/T Rappler]

Marcial added that the 4-point shot will also aid the current and future national team players to improve their range:

"It will help the development of our shooters, especially when it comes to those who play for the national team."

The Philippines is one of the biggest basketball nations in the world and was once a powerhouse in Asia. However, one of the main criticisms of the PBA is their lack of innovation that will increase attendance during live games.

While the 4-point line is a good innovation, there were only two out of the 12 teams in the league that shot better than 35.0% from the 3-point shot last season. The San Miguel Beermen shot 35.5% and the Terrafirma Dyip at 35.1%.

For those wondering why the names of the teams are like that, the league is all about sponsorships. Based on the names, San Miguel is a conglomerate company but they made their name by making beer while Terrafirma is an automotive brand.

According to a couple of team governors (H/T Inquirer Sports), fans should judge the new rule once the season starts and players start shooting 4-point shots.

Former NBA players have played in the PBA

As mentioned above, the PBA is the second-oldest operating basketball league in the world. It has been a popular destination for former NBA players looking to make some money and expand their horizons. Some of the notable "imports" in the league include Cedric Ceballos, DerMarr Johnson, Mitchell Wiggins, Terrence Jones, Al Thornton and Chris Morris.

Ceballos is a former star for the LA Lakers and Phoenix Suns, while Johnson and Morris were former lottery picks. Thornton had a great stint with the LA Clippers before injuries shortened his stay in the NBA. Wiggins is the father of Golden State Warriors star Andrew Wiggins.

Jones was a really good NBA role player before vanishing from the league at such a young age. He made headlines during his stint in the Philippines when he got clotheslined by a local player. Dwight Howard has always wanted to play in the PBA but he's over the league's height limit.
