Gilbert Arenas' ex Laura Govan opens up about their children pursuing professional basketball careers
Perhaps it is not widely known, but Laura Govan was among the best players in the country when she played high school basketball. She also earned an athletic scholarship to New Mexico State University.
With both their parents having played basketball, pressure is inevitable for Arenas and Govan's children. "The Basketball Wives of LA" sat down with Alexis Texas for an hour-long conversation in 2021.
While discussing her children, Govan said that she has trained all her children herself, but would want them to feel the pressure to take the same path as her or their father.
"I train my son and he’s a phenomenal athlete," Govan said. "I mean, I tell him all the time that between your dad and I, I feel bad for you because you know it’s a lot of pressure."
"But it’s not pressure, you just got to give it what it is. I’m like look we gave you DNA, I can’t give you heart, though. So if you got heart enough to play, then do it. But if not, let’s figure it out, what you want to do."
"You know so it’s like, I just want my kids to know and understand that like you don’t have to go the route me and daddy went because we both played professionally,” she added. (00:34:27)
Laura Govan has been absolutely supportive of her children's basketball endeavors. From attending their games to constantly hyping them up on social media, Govan has left no chance to fate.
Her eldest son Alijah Arenas has been reclassified into 2025 and should make his college commitment in the near future. Govan's eldest child, her daughter Izela, plays college basketball for Louisville.
