Without many offseason moves, the LA Lakers are once again relying on their team led by Anthony Davis and LeBron James. Their 2024-25 NBA season tipped off on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena, where they hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves for the season opener.
Last season, Davis averaged 24.7 points and a career-high 12.6 rebounds per game, while playing in 76 games, also a personal best. With new coach JJ Redick, the Lakers are expected to unlock Davis’ potential further within a more fluid offensive system.
Game 1 was an opportunity for the Lakers to showcase how they plan to utilize Anthony Davis, and he more than delivered with a monster double-double in the Lakers' 110-103 win. He tallied 36 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks, all game-highs, in 37 minutes of play.
Here are his stats from the game:

JJ Redick wants Anthony Davis to be a willing shooter
New Lakers coach JJ Redick is aiming to implement a more fluid offense, and a key part of that plan is increasing Davis' involvement in scoring.
One way they intend to achieve this is by encouraging "AD" to be more willing to shoot.
"We have talked just about a willingness to shoot," Redick said via LakeShowLife. "We are not concerned about volume, necessarily. There just has to be a willingness to shoot the basketball and he's done that and it seems like he's really embraced that."
Anthony Davis has a career 29.7% 3-point shooting average. Last season, he shot 27.1%, the sixth-lowest percentage of his 12-year career. His best season from deep was in 2017-18 when he shot 34.0% on 2.2 attempts per game.
He averaged just 1.4 3-point attempts per game last season, the fifth-lowest of his career.
"You have to take good 3s. They have to be rhythm threes. He has to be in a position within our structure to take those 3s," Redick said. "There's a lot more that goes into it than just, 'Hey, we want you shooting 3s.' But his form is excellent and that's reflected, he's always been a really good free throw shooter. So that should translate."
The first-year Lakers coach earlier expressed the team’s intention to “empower” Davis by making him “perpetually involved” on both ends for a standout season in 2024-25.
