Anthony Edwards Stats Today: 2x NBA All-Star leads Team USA (Imagn)

On Monday afternoon, Anthony Edwards and Team USA took the floor in their second showcase game. Things ended up being close down the wire, but the budding superstar helped lead his team to a victory.

In the United State's first matchup against Canada, head coach Steve Kerr opted to bring Edwards off the bench. However, he made some changes for Monday's game against Australia. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard was inserted into the starting unit and made the most of the opportunity.

Edwards led Team USA in minutes with 27 and finished with a stat line of 14 points and four rebounds. It was an efficient game for the two-time All-Star as he went 5-for-11 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

The only player for Team USA to put up more points than Edwards was Anthony Davis. He had a dominant two-way performance, recording 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Following their 98-92 win over Australia, Team USA enjoys a brief break in the action before taking the court again. Their next matchup is slated for Wednesday against Nikola Jokic and Serbia.

Anthony Edwards cementing himself as a future Team USA star

Heading into the Olympics, one of the key storylines for Team USA is the star-studded roster they've put together. While many have marveled at this collection of talent, others have brought up how it's also a passing of the torch.

Team USA's roster is an exciting mix of old and young stars. Guys like LeBron James and Kevin Durant are leading the charge, but Anthony Edwards is among the younger players looking to take the reigns for the future.

Looking at the long-term view of Team USA basketball, Edwards is showing he is capable of being a pillar for the program. He put on a strong performance in the World Cup last summer and looks poised to be a key contributor in the 2024 Olympics.

In the United State's first showcase game against Canada, Edwards still managed to have a big impact in limited minutes. He ended the matchup with 13 points and three rebounds on 60% shooting off the bench.

Seeing that he continues to be among the team's leading scorers, Steve Kerr might opt to keep Edwards in the starting lineup moving forward. As for the program as a whole, they should be watching his play with a close eye.

With guys like Durant and LeBron in their late 30s, this is likely their last run with USA basketball. Knowing this, they'll have to have players in place who can step up and lead the group in international play moving forward. Over the past year, Edwards has emerged as a leading candidate to be a staple for Team USA moving forward.
