The Australian men's basketball team, perhaps better known as the "Boomers," officially announced their roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday. NBA veteran Patty Mills will captain the team, which underperformed at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup and will look to regain its prowess on the international stage.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the team secured a bronze medal behind the USA and Japan. Mills was nothing short of fantastic, putting up 23.3 points per game, the second-highest scorer at the Olympics behind Luka Doncic, who finished with just three more total points. Most impressively, Australia managed to beat a star-studded USA team 91-83 in a warm-up match ahead of the 2020 Olympics.
In 2023, the team put up a surprising 3-2 record and finished in just 10th place, failing to make it to the knockout stage of the tournament. The team was led statistically by up-and-coming Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey, who scored 19.4 points with six assists per game. Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Exum came in third in scoring with 11 points per game.

Who else will the Australian team bring to Paris?
In addition to Mills, Giddey and Exum, the team will feature six players who either play in the NBA or recently had a contract there: Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Ingles, Josh Green, Jock Landale, Duop Reath, and Dyson Daniels. Rounding out the squad are Australia NBL stars and Tasmania JackJumpers teammates Will Magnay and Jack McVeigh, and also Japanese pro and former NBL player Nick Kay.
Veterans Dellavedova and Joe Ingles will provide bench support and key leadership for the squad. The 36-year-old Ingles is on contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves after a quiet season with the Orlando Magic.
Former NBA champion Matthew Dellavedova went to play with Melbourne United of the NBL after his career with the Cavaliers came to a close in 2020. He returned after playing 23 games for the Sacramento Kings during the 2023 season and then breaking his finger, which kept him out of the 2023 FIBA tournament.
Charlotte Hornets guard Josh Green, Portland Trail Blazers center Duop Reath, and New Orleans Pelicans guard Dyson Daniels round out Australia's younger core, and will all look to get increased minutes in this year's Olympics. Green and Daniels will be relied on for their 3-and-D play, which will complement the backcourt of Mills and Giddey, while Reath may start at the center position.
They're part of a loaded Group A at the Paris Olympics, which also consists of Greece, Spain, and Canada. Spain and Canada will bring a flurry of NBA players with established chemistry, while Greece will send out Giannis Antetokounmpo to attack the Boomers inside, who lack size and depth at the forward and center positions.
They play their first match against Spain at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille on July 27.
